Le Corbusier's LC4 Chaise "Longue" Through The Ages

“Modern life demands, and it waiting for a new kind of plan, both for the house and the city.”
By looking at any of the contributions by Le Corbusier during the age of Modernism, one can easily digest the full meaning of these words.  A perfect example is seen in his LC4 Chaise Lounge he revealed in 1928 and that has remained an iconic classic thanks to its simple and versatile beauty.

The adjustable lounge chair (originally spelled ‘longue’ by the Swiss-French architect) slides up and down on the base meaning there is an ideal position of comfort for everyone.   Comfort combined with the beauty made obvious by the absence of unnecessary ornamentation, a major ideal of the modern period, this ‘relaxing machine’ can fit in almost any room of any style.

We recognize the value of Le Corbusier’s original design and our LC4 Chaise Lounge Chair Reproduction matches the dimensions of the signature model.  We use our polished #304 stainless steel on the tubular frame rather than mild steel and chrome plating originally used and still used on the “signature” brand, due to its durability and resiliency that outshines that of the alternative.   With all the comfort and beauty of the original Chaise Lounge, but at a fraction of the price, the only question left is “leather or pony hide?”

The Latest Resurgence of Mid-Century Modern Design

The iconic designs that emerged in the middle of the 20th century were not defined as “Mid-Century Modern” until 1983 when Cara Greenberg coined the term with her book named exactly this.  It is not exactly a secret why there was suddenly a resurgence of this celebrated style in the same year Greenberg finally gave it a name.

The common notion that fashion is cyclical applies to interior design as much as it does to attire.  In the decades since 1983, Mid-Century Modern has maintained a steady following along with many spikes in popularity that keeps the genius of these designers alive from year to year.  By turning on the television and seeing almost any commercial or sitcom right now, its obvious we are enjoying latest Mid-Century resurgence.  Unlike any Mid-Century popularity boom from past years, with more affordable options like our Mid-Century Modern Furniture Reproductions, this one is being enjoyed by all generations at once.

If you ever need a reminder for why the furniture designs from the middle of the 20th century have remained classics in the decades since their emergence on the market, stop by any of our Modern Classics showroom locations in BellinghamChicago or Dallas.  After sitting in any of our accurate modern furniture reproductions, you will walk away with a refreshed memory and a new appreciation for the Mid-Century Modern style.

More Reasons to Love Wegner's Shell Chair

Its hard to believe that one of the most iconic chairs of the 20th century, Hans Wegner’s Shell Chair, was met with a mediocre welcome when it was first unveiled in 1963.  Many doubted the stability of the 3-legged design, which is ironic since it is now a revered chair for many reasons, one being its remarkable stability.

Also referred to as the Smiling Chair, it can fit in either home or office settings.  This chair exemplifies Wegner’s ideal that furniture should be beautiful from all angles, so there is no limit to the placement or angle this chair is placed in any room.

Our reproduction of Wegner’s Shell Chair closely matches the dimensions of the original design with a few adjustments for ultimate comfort.  We have also added extra cushioning in the back and seat.  With a variety of leather colors of pony hide options, this chair is an ideal addition to almost any room.

Come check it out in any of our three showroom locations in Bellingham, Chicago or Dallas!
