Scandinavian Modern Design's Impact During the Modern Age

During the 20th century, the Scandinavian countries, Finland, Norway, Sweden and Denmark, were inarguably all recognized as the hottest design spots on the globe during the age of Modernism.

Scandinavian Modern designers were unique in the way they upheld the fundamental ideals of modernism and combined it with their traditional skills they were once taught.  This meant incorporating their knowledge of woodwork and framework techniques to create some of the most iconic furniture designs of the 20th century.  These furniture designs that are still highly regarded today came from famous designers such as Arne Jacobsen, Hans Wegner, Paul Volther, Finn Juhl, Borge Mogensen, Poul Kjaerholm and Eero Saarinen.

Our Scandinavian Modern Furniture Reproductions honor the original and intended furniture designs created during the Modern age.  With the minor adjustments we added for optimum comfort along with the use of top quality materials these designers did not have during their times but that we do have thanks to technological advances in the decades since, these iconic Scandinavian furniture designs can be enjoyed for years longer than ever thought possible.

Closer Looks: Our Barcelona Chair Reproduction

After designing his iconic Barcelona Chair in 1929, Mies van der Rohe never designed another chair.  Instead he focused on his other famous structures and was once quoted as saying “a chair is a very difficult object.  A skyscraper is almost easier.”

Although this icon of modern design is admired for its beautiful simplicity, the original design neglected to make it equally comfortable and this is a key factor that is still a common complaint.

To make this chair as equally comfortable as it is beautiful, we have added a few discerning adjustments to our Barcelona Chair Reproduction that make it a pleasantly comfortable surprise to everyone sitting in it for their first time:

Foam Density:
Our high resilient foam we use has a density that is noticeably more comfortable and better suited for lounging than the hard foam used on the signature model.

Seat Slope Adjusted for Comfort:
Our Barcelona Chair Reproduction honors the dimensions of the original model, though we have decreased the seat slope in the back of the chair by 1 inch for ultimate comfort.  After sitting in the signature model, many have complained of back pain that can be attributed to the slope being too steep.  By adjusting the seat slope to be an inch higher in the back of the seat, it is better suited for the human spine and also makes it much easier to go from a sitting to standing position.

Back Seat Cushion:
Unlike the original model with a back seat cushion that shows the chair’s frame when it is sat in, we have added an extra inch to the top of the back seat cushion.  The cushion will inevitably get pushed down when sat in, though with the extra inch we have added to our cushion, our stainless steel frame will not show.

Even with these comfortable adjustments, the beautiful simplicity Mies van der Rohe intended with his original design, is still an obvious element on our reproduction.  You can come check it out and have a seat in any of our 3 showrooms in BellinghamChicago or Dallas!

The Best of Both Worlds for Modern Design Lovers and Pet Owners

All pet owners who are also modern furniture enthusiasts can rejoice not that there will never been a need to choose between the two ever again!  Although most of the materials used in the original furniture designs of the modern period couldn’t hold up to Fido’s teething phase, new technology in the decades since has provided us with substantially more durable and resilient options that we make full use of at Modern Classics Furniture:

Stainless Steel:
During the age of modernism, original furniture designers would use mild steel that was chrome-plated since it was the option at the time, though lacking in durability.  The signature brands and also most reproductions use this option that will show evidence of the scratching or chewing that is typical of all new pets.

Our reproductions make use of the highest furniture grade steel, #304 stainless steel, hand polished to high luster.  It offers an unprecedented level of durability without sacrificing the aesthetic appeal and can even be re-polished after several years to restore its original sparkle.

Leather:
Whether you are more a “cat person” or a “dog person,” paws of either are guaranteed to leave their mark on any leather that is susceptible to scratches.

Our top-grain, aniline-dyed leather we import from Italy is equipped to withstand the elements of day-to-day life, including scratches.  With the exception of our distressed leathers (which are intended to scratch as part of the aesthetic appeal), your pets can easily nap on the furniture without the risk of being scolded when you come home.

Boucle Fabric:
I’m sure you are already aware of the various ways pets can make stains on fabric furniture, so I don’t think I need to list them.  While most puppy misbehaviors can eventually be forgiven, staining furniture upholstered in fabric is a tough one to get past.  Forgiveness comes much easier though when the fabric is stain-resistant like our exclusive collection of Modern Boucle Fabric.  We use an eco-friendly stain guard finish that causes spilled liquids to bead up and can easily be wiped away without permeating the surface of the fabric.

Endless Possibilities with Accent Chairs

The way the perfect bracelet can dress up the plain little black dress, so does the subtle accent chair define the style of the room.  Many think of the term ‘accent chair’ as merely extra seating, but these small and mighty statement pieces are versatile enough to add an element of flare in any part of the house:

Dining Room:  Many ask if it is acceptable to use accent chairs at the dining table and the answer should always be ‘yes.’  Try adding a generously sized wing back chair, like our Wing Back Lounge Chair Reproduction, to the head and foot of a rectangular dining table for a perfect fusion of modern and traditional style.

Living Room:  Placement of accent chairs in the living room should be either opposite or to the side of the sofa so guests can sit and converse.  If the space in the living room is limited, armless accent chairs will take up less space like our Shell Chair Reproduction.  Living rooms with ample space to fill calls for a comfortable armchair like our LC3 Lounge Chair Reproduction.

Office: In this setting where meetings may run long and guests or clients will be seated for a while, comfort is as critical a feature as the aesthetic.  Seating for visitors in the office placed across the desk should have a perfect balance of comfort and sophistication., like our BRNO Chair Reproductions

These are just a few ideas for ways to use accent chairs, though the options are endless.  Come check out all we have to offer in our BellinghamChicago or Dallas Showrooms and you can get some ideas of your own too!

What Is 'Modern' and What is 'Contemporary'?

Many terms used to reference styles and periods of art have been loosely used for so long that most are surprised to learn the clearly defined terms.  A perfect example is when ‘contemporary’ and ‘modern’ are assumed to be synonymous, when they are actually distinctly different.

Modern refers to the period from the early to mid-20th century when innovation and simplicity were key.  It was a movement away from the excessively ornate preceding periods and toward a style that celebrated perfection in the absence of ornamentation.

Contemporary refers to the style that came after the age of modernism that ended in the late 1960s.  Contemporary refers to the different styles that are the current trend.
