A Clean Start to the New Year

One of the best ways to enter into a new year is starting it with a clean home (then resolving to keep it that way for the rest of the year).  Among the top tasks on your cleaning list will most likely involve cleaning and conditioning your leather furniture, so its a perfect time to go through the basics of leather care.

There are many leather cleaners and conditioners out there.  We recommend Lexol, especially since it does not contain any harsh chemical that could potentially damage the leather finish that sustains the leather’s durability.

Cleaning Leather:
-Always test a small inconspicuous area before doing anything else
-Apply the leather cleaner onto a clean and wet cloth
-Rub onto the leather and work up into lather
-Wipe away the foam with a clean and damp cloth

Conditioning Leather:
-After cleaning is complete, shake and apply leather conditioner to a clean and wet cloth
-Rub a thin layer onto the leather in a circular massaging motion
-Wipe away with a clean and wet cloth

Contoured Comfort in Eero Saarinen's Womb Chair

The 1948 unveiling of Eero Saarinen’s iconic Womb Chair was a sign of changing times when ‘lounging’ was becoming socially acceptable, unlike in the decades prior. Saarinen’s organically curved Womb Chair was designed at the request of his friend and colleague, Florence Knoll, who asked for “something I can really curl up in.”  Saarinen achieved exactly this and more with a chair designed to create comfort, not solely by use of cushioning, but by the use of contours that create incredible comfort in any position.

Our Womb Chair and Ottoman Reproduction closely match Saarinen’s original design  but with upgraded materials available today that were not available in 1948.  For example, our exclusive boucle textured fabrics, available in a wide array of colors options, gives it a vibrancy that is matched by a durability to ensure years of  stylish comfort in any setting.  You can read all this and more in our Womb Chair Comparison Guide.

Closer Looks: Our Exhibition Chair

When most people hear the name Mies van der Rohe, an image of his most famous Barcelona Chair immediately comes to mind.   This iconic chair he designed in 1929 for the Universal Exhibition in Barcelona, unfortunately has a beauty that supersedes its comfort for most people.

Our Barcelona Chair Reproduction is always a pleasant surprise for anyone who has found other versions to be uncomfortable, due to some slight adjustments we have made.  First, the seat slope on our version has been decreased by an inch making it more conducive to the spine thus allowing the user to lounge for hours on end without feeling the need to get up and stretch their back.  For anyone who has disliked the rock hard seat this chair has become known for, they are quick to appreciate the softer density of our version which a Dacron wrapped multi-density foam than offers an unparalleled level of comfort.

You can read all about our version in our comparison guide or visit one of our showrooms in BellinghamChicago or Dallasxb to check it out in person!

A Few Benefits of a Minimalist Home

One of the pioneers of the minimalist home, Mies van der Rohe, was once famously quoted saying ‘less is more.’  Today, minimalism is not only a celebrated style of interior design but also a style that has many benefits that can lead to an overall improved lifestyle that include, though are not limited to, the following:

More Time To Yourself—its amazing how much easier everything becomes once unnecessary clutter is eliminated.  You will notice you have much more time on your hands that was once spent looking for lost items

Quality Furniture— without a large quantity of “stuff” to hide behind, you will find yourself considering the level of quality of everything in your home in a whole new way

Easier to Clean—with less clutter in the way, cleaning not only takes significantly less time, but it is also immediately obvious to all visitors they are in a clean home that is well-cared for and loved

Less Stress—it is only once a proper purge of all junk that you can experience the peacefulness that comes from the absence of clutter.  Now that you only have what you need in your home, less time will be spent sifting through clutter and more time can be spent on what is important.

Simple Colors—one key element of minimalist homes is a simple and neutral color palette along with natural light.  Both of these elements are ideal for creating a pacifying home setting.

The Humble Florence Knoll

During the 20th century when innovative furniture designs were emerging, Florence Knoll took it upon herself to design what she referred to as “fill-in pieces that no one else wants to do.”  Her geometric furniture designs offset the organically shaped and curved designs of her colleagues, like Saarinen and Bertoia.

Perhaps if Florence knew her designs would achieve an unwavering icon status in the following decades, she might have given herself more credit for what she humbly called her  ‘meat and potato’ furniture designs.

Our Florence Knoll Lounge Chair Reproduction follows the same dimensions of the original model.  We have improved upon it even more by using a higher quality of materials that have become available in the years since the original design.  You can read all about these improvements in our Comparison Guide.
